Hosea’s Family Reflects God’s Directions to Him

This meditation is based on a passage for September 26, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Hosea 1:1-2:1

Reflection and Question: Amos and Hosea are the oldest prophetic books in the Old Testament. Hosea preached at the time Assyria defeated Jehu and the Northern Kingdom was destroyed. He prophesied in both word and deed, particularly by obeying God’s command that he marry a prostitute and name her children after both God’s judgment and salvation. In doing this, Hosea’s actions start with God’s condemnation but end with the promise that Israel will be the “Children of the living God.” What does it mean to you that a prostitute is equated with the people of God?

Prayer: Mighty God of Israel, You directed Hosea to enact Your judgment and love for Your people. He took Gomer as his wife and named her children as You commanded. His act reminds us now of Your love and forgiveness. Thank You. Amen.
